New Swimming Opportunity For Everyone Aged 18+

Swimming NZ & NZ Masters Swimming Collaborate

For the first time, Swimming NZ and NZ Masters Swimming are excited to announce a joint initiative of hosting a swimming event specially tailored for those aged 18 years and older. With both organisations focused on getting more people swimming more often, the 2023 NZ Masters Swimming Championships will be open to anyone aged 18+ to participate in a social and fun 3-day event. This is the first time that participants will be able to enter in a pool competition as either a Swimming NZ member, NZ Masters Swimming member or not a member but wants to have a race in a social environment and experience an introduction to masters swimming.

This new event will be held at the recently completed Hawke’s Bay Regional Aquatic Centre from Thursday 25 – Saturday 27 May 2023. The event is a great opportunity to be social by reuniting or making new friends from around the country. and have a swim across 3 afternoons in the stunning Hawke’s Bay and is the perfect opportunity to have a weekend away and soak up what the region has to offer, such as visiting the local wineries.

Swimming NZ’s Head of Participation & Events, Dale Johnson, is stoked about this joint initiative.

“We are really proud of this new event and the collaboration with NZ Masters Swimming. As part of our strategic focus of getting more people swimming more often, we have identified that we don’t provide enough opportunities for those aged 18 years and over to participate in social and fun competitions, and therefore incentive for Kiwis to maintain an active lifelong love of the water. We believe this new event being open to anyone is an important step to further supporting adults to be active in the water.”

NZ Masters Swimming President, Russell Jones, is looking forward to the event.

“This is the first time we have been able to host a national event for our NZ Masters swimmers since 2019, so we are excited about this opportunity alongside Swimming NZ. We are proud to have opened entries to the wider New Zealand population, as we know there are thousands of Kiwis that love to be active for health, fitness and enjoyment. We believe this event will be a popular weekend away for a combination of swimming and socializing.”

The event information has been finalized and released on 10 February. Entries are now open and will close on 11 May 2023.

Be sure to gather your friends and whanau for this new event and join us for a great weekend away of racing and socializing. We look forward to hosting you in Hawke’s Bay in 2023.
