Kiwis Claim Medals and Records at World Masters in Doha

Event Wrap of the 2024 World Aquatics Masters Championships

The 2024 World Aquatics Masters Championships took place from 23 February to 3 March in Doha, Qatar. Following on from our most successful World Aquatics Championships in history, the inspired NZ Masters team brought home an array of medals and NZ Records.

Steve Prescott (Dunedin Masters) kicked off the campaign strongly winning the gold medal in the Men's 3000m Open Water 70 - 74 age group (47:20.70). This was a particularly impressive victory given he snapped his Achilles tendon injury in January.

Prescott continued his fine form in the pool, taking out the Men's 1500m Freestyle 70 - 74 age group to win his second gold of the championships. He backed this up with a 4th in the Men's 800m Freestyle 70 - 74 age group whilst breaking a NZ Record by nearly 30 seconds to set the new mark 11.28.82. Prescott rounded out his championships with a bronze in the Men's 400m Freestyle 70 - 74 age group.

Kyla Steenhart (Roskill Masters) claimed the bronze medal in the Women's 200m Breaststroke (2:51.52) whilst breaking her new NZ Record in the 45 - 49 age group, dropping more than 5 seconds off the previous record. Steenhart also claimed 4th in the Women's 100m Breaststroke 45 - 49 age group (1:18.90), narrowly out touched for the bronze medal.

Other Kiwis in action saw Darren Carter (Katikati Masters) achieve a personal best time in the Men's 50m Freestyle 55 - 59 age group (32.37). Carter also took on the Men's 200m Freestyle 55 - 59 age group finishing 13th (2:46.70).

New Zealand-based Brazilian Raphael Marinzeck Borborema (Tasman Gold) competed in multiple events across the championships, achieving 8th in the Men's 200m Breaststroke (2:41.16). Borborema also finished 13th in the Men's 50m Butterfly 40 - 44 age group (29.59).

Congratulations to the whole team for their amazing results and the courage they showed representing New Zealand.
