Eight Aquablacks Named for Doha 2024 World Aquatics Championships

Team Announcement of the New Zealand Swimming Team for the 2024 World Aquatics Championships

A talented team of eight Aquablacks has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Doha 2024 World Aquatics Championships.

The selections were made following competition at Swimming New Zealand’s World Championships Trials, held this weekend at the Sir Owen G Glenn National Aquatics Centre in Auckland.

2023 World Aquatics Championship bronze medallist Erika Fairweather (Neptune and Swim Dunedin) spearheads the team. The 19-year-old will compete in the women’s 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle, as well as the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Joining Erika in the squad is two-time Commonwealth Games champion Lewis Clareburt (Club 37), who will contest the 200m and 400m individual medley in Doha in February.

Adding further experience to the team is Andrew Jeffcoat (Club 37), who’ll contest the 100m backstroke. The Auckland swimmer will be looking to build on an impressive 2023 World Championships where he placed 13th in the event.

It’ll be a busy meet for Eve Thomas (Coast) who’s been selected in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle as well as the 4x200m freestyle relay. She’ll be joined by Caitlin Deans (Neptune & Swim Dunedin) in the 1500m freestyle.

Coast’s Cameron Gray also returns from the 2023 World Championships, selected to contest the men’s 100m freestyle.

Rounding out the squad is Summer Osborne (North Shore) and Laticia-Leigh Transom (Ice Breaker Aquatics) who will compete in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Swimming NZ's Olympic Programme Lead, Gary Francis, says it’s a solid squad.

“Swimmer for swimmer, this will be one of the strongest squads we’ve taken away in a long time,” said Francis.
“Everyone in this team will have ambitions to make semis and finals in Doha and we’re really looking forward to the opportunity to test ourselves against the best in the world."

Three coaches were selected at the team announcement, with the experienced trio of Lars Humer (Swim Dunedin), Michael Weston (Coast) and Mitch Nairn (Club 37) helping the Aquablacks with their preparations in Doha.

The 2024 World Aquatics Championships will be held from February 2nd to 18th in Doha. Congratulations to our team selected for Doha.
