Day 3 Wrap of the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha
New Zealand’s Eve Thomas (Coast) has swum an impressive Women's 1500m Freestyle final to finish fourth at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha.
The 23-year-old went out with the leaders over the first 200m before the top three pulled away. Thomas then settled into her work and held strong for a her best ever World Championship result, finishing in a personal best time of 16:09.43s.
“That 1500 was a great swim and I’m stoked with a PB and finishing fourth,” said Thomas.
“The team has been brilliant, we’ve really been getting behind one another and supporting and I’m hoping for more good swims to come with the 4x200m and 800m later this week.”
Newly crowned 400m Freestyle World Champion Erika Fairweather was also back in the pool, achieving the Paris Olympic qualification time as she qualified fastest for the 200m Freestyle final.
Fairweather finished strongly over the last 50m to touch the wall in 1:55.75s. She will contest the final tomorrow morning NZDT where she’ll be looking for another medal.
Lewis Clareburt (Club 37) then got his World Championship campaign underway, racing the 200m Butterfly.
The four-time Commonwealth Games medallist breezing through his heat before recording a time of 1:55.82s in his semi-final, to qualify sixth fastest for tomorrow’s final.
“I was pretty pleased with that swim and now going to back it up tomorrow. I’m having a great time over here, we’ve got a super tight knit team and we’ve got some little bets going between us athletes which is definitely adding to the entertainment.”
Day four heats see Lewis Clareburt returning to the pool for the Men's 200m Individual Medley and Cameron Gray (Coast) in the Men's 100m Freestyle. The heats start from 7.30pm NZDT and finals from 5am NZDT the following morning.
