Thomas and Pedersen Shine on Day Two in Budapest

Day Two Wrap – 2024 World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) - Budapest, Hungary

Coast teammates Zoe Pedersen and Eve Thomas were the standout performers on the second day of competition at the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Budapest. Pedersen continued her impressive rise, claiming the 17 years New Zealand age record in the 100m freestyle, whilst Thomas notched a tenth place finish in the 800m freestyle.

Eve Thomas (Coast) returned to the competition pool for the second consecutive day, stepping up in distance to the women’s 800m freestyle. Racing in lane seven in the last of the morning's timed finals, the two-time Olympian used her experience to get away to a strong start to sit in sixth place after the first 100m. With the action happening on the other side of the pool through the opening half of the race, Thomas kept her eye on the leaders and moved up to fifth place, just trailing them. Thomas made her move after the halfway mark, progressing to fourth place as she started to reel in the leaders and pull away from the mid-pack. With 200m left to go, Thomas was closing fast and gained a place over the final laps to touch third on the wall (8:20.08) behind local crowd favourite Ajna Kesely (Hungary – 8:18.04). It was a big personal best for Thomas, who doesn’t frequently swim short course, with the time also faster than her long course entry time.

After the results were combined at the completion of the evening's fastest timed final, Lani Pallister (Australia – 8:01.95) retained her world championship title in a new Championship Record ahead of Isabel Gose (Germany – 8:05.42) and Katie Grimes (USA – 8:05.90). Thomas finished tenth overall.

Congratulations to Thomas, coach Michael Weston and her support team. Thomas will be back on day four for her last individual swim – the women’s 1500m freestyle.

Zoe Pedersen (Coast) made her senior debut following some impressive performances at the junior international level over the in the past 18 months, competing in the women’s 100m freestyle. Racing in the fourth heat, Pedersen was quick off the blocks and took control of the field. Turning first at every turn, the youngster went stroke for stroke with Jillian Crooks (Cayman Islands – 54.13), ultimately winning the heat. Pedersen (53.86) knocked nearly half a second off her personal best time to break the 17 years New Zealand age record. Her result saw her finish 31st overall, a significant jump on her seeding of 44th fastest coming into the championships.

Congratulations to Pedersen, coach John Gatfield and her support team. Pedersen will be back in action on day five for her next individual event – the women’s 50m freestyle.

Brearna Crawford (Waitakere) also made her senior international debut on day two, taking on the women’s 100m breaststroke. Having spent the past four years living, studying and training at Indiana University in the United States, Crawford has gained plenty of experience racing internationally in short course yards over recent years. Using that experience as she started in the fifth heat, Crawford got away smartly from the outside lanes to be seventh at the first turn, before the middle lanes pulled away in the second half of the race to touch ninth on the wall (1:07.10). Crawford produced her fastest time internationally, and fifth fastest time of her career, to claim 34th overall on debut.

Congratulations to Crawford, coach Paul Kent and the coaching staff at Indiana University, and her wider support team for her performance in Budapest. She will return for the women’s 50m breaststroke on day five.

Hugo Wrathall (Jasi) was the third Kiwi swimmer of the day to make his senior debut for New Zealand, contesting his only individual swim of the championships. Having taken the opportunity to gain experience at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cups in recent months, Wrathall settled into his pacing across the first lap before rounding out his heat in tenth. Wrathall achieved his fastest time internationally and the third fastest of his career (49.39) to finish 55th overall.

Congratulations to Wrathall, coach Pete Burgon and his support team for his performance upon senior debut.
