Competition Wrap - 2025 NZ Masters Swimming Championships

We had a great weekend of racing at the 2025 NZ Masters Swimming Championships between 23 - 25 May. The championships were held in Auckland during the same weekend as the 2025 Apollo Projects NZ Swimming Championships for the first time, which was well received and a win-win for everyone involved.
More than 125 swimmers competed over the weekend, with a 66 year age difference between our youngest and oldest competitors, showcasing that swimming really is a sport and physical activity that you can do for life.
Jan O'Donnell (North Shore Masters) was our eldest competitor, and smashed multiple NZ records in the 90 - 94 years age group as she powered her way through the pool in her preferred freestyle events.
Annie Soutter Horton (Jasi Masters) was another standout performer during the championships, breaking multiple 50 - 54 years NZ age records previously held by Aquablack #102 Rebecca Perrott.
Aquablack #245 Laura Quilter (North Shore) returned after her record-breaking appearance in 2024, once again being the fastest overall in the 50m freestyle. Quilter was just outside her World Record time, before withdrawing from the other races to focus her attention on the 2025 Apollo Projects NZ Swimming Championships. Here she secured a World Aquatics qualifying time that saw her selected to represent New Zealand for the first time in eleven years at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore later this year.
Quilter, Tate Pichon (Waitakere City Masters), Nicolas Cecioni (Raumati Masters), Tessa Field (Levin Masters) and Lance Dustow (Central Hawke's Bay) were the only competitors to race across both championships, who made the most of the opportunities provided for them as swimmers aged 18 years and over.
There were some other standout performances across all ages, with lots of NZ Masters records being broken which will be finalised over the coming days. Congratulations to all of these swimmers who achieved these times.
Swimming NZ's Head of Participation, Competitions & Engagement, Dale Johnson, thoroughly enjoyed the championships.
"I loved seeing people of all ages enjoying the opportunity to race, and to have more than 125 swimmers Unlock Their Greatness was a treat. To race alongside each competitor was lots of fun and I can't wait for next year already! Thank you to all the competitors for taking part and creating a supportive, social and fun atmosphere."
The atmosphere across the championships was highlighted by the outstanding turn out at the prize giving and social function held at the completion of racing on Sunday afternoon. Thanks to everyone who came along to conclude the competition and celebrate the weekend of swimming.
The podium for the champions of each age group were presented medals at the prize giving, calculated by the swimmers accruing the most points across their individual events (up to six permitted). Ribbons were presented to the relay teams on the podium for each age group, as well as the special Masters awards. The full list of age group and award winners can be found below.
The top club was a hard fought battle, with Roskill Masters regaining the title ahead of last year's champs North Shore Masters. Waitakere City Masters came in third, with Jasi Masters fourth and Waikato Masters rounding out the top five clubs at the championships.
You can find the full results from the championships via Swimify at the link below.
A special thank you to our technical officials who volunteered their time to help us go racing at both championships across the week.
