Ouwehand and Fairweather Add Bronze to Medal Tally in Glasgow

Day Two Wrap – Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
Hazel Ouwehand (Phoenix – coached by David Lyles) and Erika Fairweather (North Shore – coached by Graham Hill) have added two more medals to New Zealand's swimming campaign, each claiming bronze on day two at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Competing in her first Commonwealth Games final, Ouwehand delivered a superb performance to claim bronze in the women's 50m butterfly, before Fairweather backed up her silver medal in the women's 400m freestyle with another podium finish in the 200m freestyle.
Ouwehand, the 26-year-old Aucklander stopped the clock in 25.76 to finish third behind Australia's Alex Perkins, comfortably holding off South Africa's Jessica Thompson in the battle for bronze. Teammate Zoe Pedersen (Coast – coached by Michael Weston) also impressed, placing fifth in 26.24 to round out a strong showing from the New Zealand pair.
"Wow, yep, I'm happy with that," said Ouwehand. "In the final moments you're just putting your head down, pushing hard and trying to get every last inch out of your touch."
Fairweather, 22, produced a composed swim in the women's 200m freestyle final, clocking 1:55.24 to secure bronze after a strong closing 50 metres. Qualifying fifth fastest from the morning heats and swimming from lane two, she sat in fourth place for much of the race before surging past England's Freya Colbert in the closing stages to finish on the podium.
Australian Mollie O'Callaghan claimed gold in 1:54.66.
Fairweather was delighted to claim her second Commonwealth Games medal in as many days.
"I'm proud of that effort. That was a super competitive final, so to be right up there is awesome," said Fairweather.
New Zealand also went close to another medal in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay, with Cameron Gray (United – coached by Andy McMillan), Carter Swift (United / Griffith Uni – coached by Tommy Fraser-Holmes), Chelsey Edwards (North Shore – coached by Graham Hill) and Fairweather combining to finish fourth in 3:24.82. The quartet smashed the New Zealand record by almost three seconds, producing a standout performance despite narrowly missing the podium.
Milana Tapper (St Peter's / Griffith Uni – coached by Tommy Fraser-Holmes) swam the anchor leg in the heats, where New Zealand qualified for the final as the third fastest nation.
Earlier in the finals session, Amber George and Savannah-Eve Martin (both of Coast – coached by Michael Weston) contested the women's 100m backstroke semi-finals. George recorded 1:01.24 to finish 11th overall, while Martin clocked 1:01.35 to place 12th, with both just missing progression to the final.
Martin was pleased with her performance despite falling short of the final.
"It's not my best, but it was faster than I did this morning. I gave it everything I had and I'm proud of my effort," said Martin.
Attention now turns to day three, with Zoe Pedersen and Chelsey Edwards contesting the women's 100m freestyle heats, Hazel Ouwehand returning for the women's 100m butterfly heats, and Erika Fairweather, Caitlin Deans and Eve Thomas lining up in the women's 1500m freestyle timed final.
