New Zealand Swimmers Set for World Cup

Competition Preview for the 2025 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup

ree

Following various World Championships in recent months, we are excited to name the New Zealand team for the 2025 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup series, which is the next international venture on the road to Los Angeles in 2028.

The team consists of a strong combination of experience and emerging talent, bringing together current Aquablacks with senior development swimmers, including invitations based on this year’s form.

Six Aquablacks bring a wealth of international experience to the group. Previous World Cup medallists Erika Fairweather (North Shore), Lewis Clareburt (Club 37) and Caitlin Deans (Neptune & Swim Dunedin) will lead the team. Fellow Aquablacks Chelsey Edwards (North Shore), Cameron Gray (United) and Hazel Ouwehand (Phoenix Aquatics) will hope to bring their form from the 2025 NZ Short Course Swimming Championships to the series.

Isabelle Gibson (Club 37) will return to the World Cups for the second consecutive year and will be joined by Brearna Crawford (Waitakere), Jack Hendy (Club 37) and Gina McCarthy (Hamilton Aquatics & RPC Waikato) who are fresh off gold medals at the 2025 NZ Short Course Swimming Championships last week.

All the swimmers head on tour off the back of strong form at the recent 2025 NZ Short Course Swimming Championships in Auckland, with Jack Hendy, Chelsey Edwards and Brearna Crawford only competing at the first two stops in the United States of America.

The team is due to be led and coached by Swimming NZ’s Olympic Head Coach, Graham Hill (subject to confirmation), and supported by United’s Andy McMillan.

Hill has long championed the value of the World Cups, enabling intense racing in a concentrated window.

“This is the perfect opportunity to race fast with the best in the world over and over again. We saw in Singapore and Otopeni how fast the world is swimming, and can get straight back amongst it across three consecutive meets.”

The World Cup is being held across three consecutive weekends in Canada and the United States of America. The first leg is held in Carmel (Indiana, USA) from 10 – 12 October. The following weekend the racing will be held in Westmont (Illinois, USA) from 17 – 19 October. The final stop of the series will be held in Toronto (Ontario, Canada) from 23 – 25 October.

The 2025 series will be hosted as short course competitions, with some of the best swimmers from around the world competing across the three consecutive weekends. Heats will be held in morning sessions and finals in the evening sessions

The Swimming NZ selectors have also acknowledged several other swimmers who met the team standards but have chosen to prioritise training at this time.

Swimmers from all 2025 teams and invitations will come together for one final time in camp in Cambridge in early December.
