Competition Preview of the 2025 Tri Series

Two teams, each consisting of 20 swimmers, have arrived in Ballarat, Victoria, ahead of the 2025 Tri Series being held between Thursday 10 – Saturday 12 July.
Following two years of Victoria and Western Australia travelling to New Zealand, the competition will this time be hosted on Australian shores by the two-time reigning champions.
Tri Series has been designed to provide high-level representative competition for swimmers and coaches. It aims to challenge athletes' racing skills, push them outside their comfort zones, and promote personal growth in a performance environment. It also aims to foster team camaraderie and build lasting friendships amongst swimmers across the four teams.
The competition format consists of five match races, where swimmers will race to score points for their team. Individuals can race in a maximum of three events per match, specifically two individual events and one relay per match. Two athletes from each team may race in each event. Points are awarded for the placing in each of the individual events, skins events and relays across each match.
Awards will be presented to the top female and male point scorer, overall Para athlete and the overall winning team.
As this competition is not livestreamed, you can follow the results through Meet Mobile or visit the Swimming Victoria competition webpage where they will upload results following each match. We also encourage you to follow Swimming NZ on social media for updates during the competition.
Each of the New Zealand teams have leaders appointed. Team Black have Noah Ireland-Spicer (Otaki Titans), Jasmine Lyles (Phoenix Aquatics) and Charlotte Murphy (Aquagym) leading their teammates, with the team guided by Mat Woofe (Hamilton Aquatics & RPC Waikato) as the team head coach and Tracy Breuer (Kiwi West Aquatics) as his assistant coach.
Team White are being led by Millie Bell (North Canterbury) and Leo English (Swim Rotorua), guided by Carl Gordon (Wharenui) as the team head coach and Jon Winter (Otaki Titans) as his assistant coach.
The New Zealand teams are being guided by Tri Series Head Coach David Lyles (Phoenix Aquatics) and supported by Tri Series Team Manager Brigitte Mahan (North Canterbury).
Team White co-leader Millie Bell is looking forward to the competition getting underway.
"I am incredibly excited to start racing at Tri Series this week, especially as this is my first time representing New Zealand on the international stage. It is a dream come true to be able to wear the fern, and can't wait to race hard alongside my team of talented swimmers."
Team White co-leader Leo English is also ready for competition.
"I'm really proud to be here representing New Zealand at Tri Series. It's a great opportunity to experience new racing environments overseas and compete alongside a strong team full of great people. Looking forward to learning, racing hard, and making the most of this experience."
Team Black co-leader Jasmine Lyles notes it's a privilege to swim for New Zealand.
"It is always an honour to put on the fern and represent something bigger than myself."
The team are undergoing their final preparations in the team camp ahead of racing getting underway. As part of their preparations, the teams have had the opportunity to connect through sharing dinner and a quiz with teams made up across the four teams.
Good luck to the swimmers and coaches selected to represent New Zealand at this competition. Go Kiwis!
