Recognition of our New Zealand Technical Officials' International Appointments for 2025

Swimming New Zealand would like to congratulate the following five New Zealanders who have been appointed to international officiating positions in 2025. The five appointed to the respective positions across three World Championships are:
Carlrine Gillespie (Northland) – Pool (World Para Swimming Championships)
Gavin Ion (Waikato) - Pool (World Aquatics Championships)
Paul Matson (Wellington) - Open Water (World Aquatics Championships
Ellie Sherwood (Bay of Plenty) – Pool (World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships)
John West (Auckland) – Open Water Commission Member (World Aquatics Championships)
Fresh from receiving the Domestic Technical Official of the Year in 2024, Ellie Sherwood will make her first appearance at a World Aquatics competition. Sherwood will travel to Romania for the 2025 World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships as her first appointment since being a new addition to the World Aquatics Swimming Officials List earlier this year.
Paul Matson makes his first appearance at a major international competition in nine years when he travels to Singapore to be an open water official at the World Aquatics Championships, having most recently been an open water official at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. In recent years, Matson has been an integral part of the delivery of our NZ Open Water Swimming Championships as the Technical Director.
Gavin Ion has been appointed to the World Aquatics Championships for the second time, having previously officiated at the long course championships in Budapest in 2022. Ion will officiate at the pool competition in Singapore commencing in late July.
Carlrine Gillespie will appear at the World Para Swimming Championships for the fourth time in her career, having previously officiated in Mexico City in 2017, London in 2019 and Manchester in 2023. Gillespie was part of the officiating team at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games last year and is Swimming NZ's Technical Official & Volunteer Development Lead. Gillespie will travel to Singapore for the championships where racing starts on 21 September.
Swimming NZ Life Member John West will return to the World Aquatics Championships for the eleventh time of his career as part of his role on the Open Water Swimming Commission. His appearance at this level commenced in Perth in 1998 and involvement at the top level has spanned across 27 years. West will be alongside Matson in Singapore for the open water competition.
These five officials will play a key role in the delivery of the swimming where our New Zealand teams will compete over the coming months. Most of these teams were announced on the final night of the 2025 Apollo Projects NZ Swimming Championships.
On behalf of Swimming NZ and our whole community, we would like to congratulate and thank each of these Kiwis appointed to international roles in 2025 for their continued service to the New Zealand, World Aquatics and World Para Swimming communities. It's a well deserved recognition for the time and expertise you provide our sport.
