Fairweather Claims Third Commonwealth Games Medal

Day Three Wrap – Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
Erika Fairweather (North Shore – coached by Graham Hill) has continued her outstanding Commonwealth Games campaign, claiming silver in the women's 1500m freestyle to headline another strong day for New Zealand in Glasgow.
Fairweather, 22, delivered another composed distance swim, clocking 15:58.97 to secure silver behind Australia's Lani Pallister (15:41.03). The Aquablack stayed with the pace through much of the race before holding off Australia's Molly Walker over the closing stages to finish under the 16-minute mark.
The silver adds to Fairweather's growing medal collection in Glasgow, following silver in the 400m freestyle and bronze in the 200m freestyle. It also marks her third Commonwealth Games medal after arriving in Glasgow without previously reaching the podium at the Games.
"I'm super happy, super stoked! Lani's always going to be hard to catch. Going under 16 minutes again and coming away with another silver medal is something I'm really proud of," said Fairweather.
There were further encouraging performances in the women's 1500m freestyle, with Caitlin Deans (Neptune & Swim Dunedin – coached by Lars Humer) producing a personal best of 16:08.62 to finish fifth, while Eve Thomas (Coast – coached by Michael Weston) placed eighth in 16:29.63 to complete a strong all-round performance from New Zealand's distance swimmers.
Hazel Ouwehand (Phoenix – coached by David Lyles) continued her consistent form by safely progressing to the final of the women's 100m butterfly. The 26-year-old, who claimed bronze in the 50m butterfly on day two, clocked 58.56 to finish fourth in her semi-final and qualify seventh fastest for the final after improving significantly on her morning heat swim.
"My aim was to get out to a flyer in the first 50 metres then hold on for dear life! I'm super stoked to be in the final and glad I've got a bit of time now to recover and get ready for the final," said Ouwehand.
In the women's 100m freestyle, 19-year-old Zoe Pedersen (Coast – coached by Michael Weston) recorded 55.49 to finish 12th overall, narrowly missing progression to the final in one of the strongest events of the meet.
"That was a competitive field. It's still a bit surreal to be swimming at a Commonwealth Games. I have to pinch myself. I'm out here swimming with teammates I've looked up to for a long time and to know I have the country behind me is an awesome feeling," said Pedersen.
Earlier in the day, Chelsey Edwards (North Shore – coached by Graham Hill) clocked 56.72 to place 22nd in the 100m freestyle.
Looking ahead to day four, Carter Swift and Cameron Gray will race in the men's 100m freestyle heats, while Amber George and Savannah-Eve Martin take to the pool in the women's 50m backstroke. Lewis Clareburt will contest the men's 200m butterfly, while Joshua Willmer will be in action in the men's SB9 100m breaststroke.
Hazel Ouwehand returns for the women's 100m butterfly final in the evening session, with the day concluding with New Zealand lining up in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay final.
