Canterbury Community Having A Go

Successful Have A Go Meet held in Canterbury over the weekend

Congratulations to the 158 swimmers who took part in the Swimming Canterbury West Coast Have A Go Meet held in Christchurch over the weekend.

This is a new initiative that the region has organised to provide people of all ages with a financially accessible opportunity to "taste test" the sport of swimming in a fun and welcoming environment. The meet was available to anyone who wasn't a club or competitive swimmer, and was promoted at local pools and swim schools as an introduction opportunity to get involved in fun racing opportunities.

The feedback from the meet was extremely positive, with 90 participants signing up as recreational swimmers at the meet.

SCWC's Participation & Community Engagement Manager, Quinton Hurley, was thrilled with how well the meet went.

"We’re extremely pleased with the overwhelming success of the event. We are already in the planning stage of our next “Have A Go” Carnival, and see it as a regular event going forwards. We will also continue to include “Have A Go” races in our competition events. These provide opportunities for future swimmers to see competitive racing in action."

The atmosphere at the event was extraordinary, with the venue filled with parents, swim teachers, and swimmers actively engaging with each other, and creating new connections.

"It was beyond exciting to see so many new faces on the pool deck enjoying the sport we love."

Swimming NZ is stoked to see that this meet was a roaring success over the weekend and look forward to seeing these continue around the country moving forward. Thank you Swimming Canterbury West Coast for hosting the meet for your local community, and well done to the participants who got involved.
