Bronze Order of the Day as Kiwi Swimmers Continue to Shine

Day 3 Wrap of the Trinbago 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games

New Zealand’s swimmers have continued their medal winning ways at the Commonwealth Youth Games, picking up two bronze medals on the penultimate day of competition.

Christchurch swimmer Hope Chimel swum a solid 200m backstroke final to comfortably place third at Trinbago 2023.

Chimel posted a time of 2:17.78s for bronze behind Scotland’s Holly McGill and Australia’s Zoe Ammundsen.

“I’m still shaking, it hasn’t quite sunk in yet,” said Chimel.

“I stuck to my plan and raced really hard. I tried to keep up with others and really pushed it on that last lap. I was in shock when I realised I won bronze, it’s so cool.”

Amelia Bray claimed her second medal of the meet, placing third in the 100m Butterfly. Bray touched the wall in 1:01.32s for bronze, behind Australia’s Mikayla Bird who took gold and Lille McPherson in silver.

The medal joins the silver Bray won earlier in the week in the 50m Butterfly.

Three other Kiwis were also in action in the finals. Kevin Zhang placed fourth in the 100m Breaststroke to just miss out on a medal.

Hanna Abdou placed seventh in her 400m Freestyle final, with Caleb Carlisle sixth in the 100m Butterfly.

The Mixed 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay team rounded out the evening with another fourth placing.

The New Zealand swimming team has now won five medals across the three days of competition. The athletes are back in the pool tomorrow for the final day of racing and will be looking to add to their haul.
