Battle Down Under As Tri Series Gets Underway

Competition Preview - 2024 Tri Series

We are pumped to have the 2024 Tri Series getting underway, with four teams facing off in match racing over the next three days. Five separate matches will be held at Waterworld in Hamilton from 4 – 6 October after the teams have completed a couple of days together in a pre-camp.

The Tri Series is a competition that has been specifically designed to introduce young NZ swimmers to the demands of performance racing in an international environment. For the second consecutive year, the Tri Series consists of two New Zealand teams battling it out against two Australian states in Victoria and Western Australia.

The competition itself is a series of five meets held across two and a half days. Each swimmer must race in two individual events and one relay in every match. Swimmers predominantly race the events from the ‘event pairings’ that they were selected in, but they will also be required to swim in other events throughout the meet. The team coaches will post their team selections only hours before racing begins so swimmers have to learn resilience and flexibility, as well as knowing they are racing for their team. There is little rest time between matches and athletes learn the importance of recovery processes, good warm-up and swim down and how important correct nutrition is before, during and after competition.

Scoring points for the team is a major focus of the competition format, with points awarded for placings in each match race. Bonus points are also awarded for executing respective skills in each individual event and for any Tri Series Record broken.

Overall, the Tri Series is a unique experience, and swimmers who get the opportunity to compete in it learn much about themselves as well as having a great time in a very fast-paced team environment.

Swimming NZ's Olympic Programme Lead, Gary Francis, believes Tri Series is an important step in athlete development.

"We are looking forward to seeing our swimmers in action over the next few days. The format is a great opportunity for athletes to develop and race for their team against Australian states. For many of our athletes, it will be their first experience of international racing, and will be an important step in their development."
