Cameron Gray fulfilled a lifelong dream when he represented New Zealand at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, competing in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly.
Gray began his swimming journey with North Shore Swimming, quickly emerging as a top age-group performer and setting multiple national age records across sprint backstroke, butterfly, and freestyle. He gained his first international experience at the Australian State Teams Championships in 2018 and 2019.
His breakout year came in 2022. At 18, he made his Aquablack debut at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Budapest. Just weeks later, Gray won bronze in the 50m butterfly at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, setting a New Zealand record of 23.27.
He went on to break multiple national records at the 2022 World Short Course Championships and impressed again at the 2023 NZ Championships, breaking the 100m freestyle record (48.29) while leading off Coast Swimming Club’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
Gray went on to compete at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, where he notably finished in 19th place in the 100m freestyle, narrowly missing out on a semi-final appearance. But he didn't have to wait long to experience a World Championships semi-final. Seven months later, he progressed to the semi-finals of the 100m freestyle at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, placing 14th.
Gray set the pool alight at the 2024 New Zealand Swimming Championships in Hawke's Bay when he broke his New Zealand record and qualified for the Olympic Games in the 100m freestyle with a time of 48.26. Gray took on two events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games – placing 31st in the 100m freestyle and 32nd in the 100m butterfly.
Coached in his late teens by Olympian Andy McMillan, Gray later trained under Michael Weston at Coast Swimming Club, before reuniting with McMillan at United Swimming Club in 2025.
