Growing up in Whakatane, New Zealand, Hayden Wilde has always had a love for the outdoors, for exploring and being active. His childhood consisted of every outdoor adventure sport under the sun and multiple other pursuits.
Although he suffered a terrible loss as a young man when his father passed away in tragic circumstances, Wilde’s focus didn’t wane and he made a push for greatness.
Wilde broke through dramatically as he won the two-day Coast to Coast event in his homeland in 2016. He followed that up by grabbing two Xterra Under-19 World titles and the ITU Cross Tri World Championships at Under-23 level.
After that, Wilde graduated onto World Triathlon competitions in World Cup and World Triathlon Series (WTS) format. Though swimming was his weaker discipline, his aggressive bike strength and strong run always mean he's a force to be reckoned with in any event.
2021 was Wilde's biggest year to date. He claimed victories in the Xterra Off-Road Triathlon in Maui, Hawaii, and then took a bronze medal home from the Games in Tokyo.
Competing in Tokyo was a huge achivement for Wilde in itself, but taking a medal was a dream come true – especially considering he only set his sights on Olympic-distance triathlon after watching the 2016 event on TV.
He followed that achievement up with a series of big Superleague Triathlon Championship wins in 2022, as well as securing second at the World Championship Series in Yokohama, Japan, and at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK.
